Son of Richard — northern -son patronymic.
The history of Richardson
Richard was a crusader-age favourite — lion-hearted in story if not in every labourer's hut — so northern England generated rivers of Richards and, when parish clerks wanted tidy surnames, **Richardson** and **Richards** in competing spellings. Shipyards and pithead tally rooms on Tyneside and Teesside later packed the same patronymic into steam-age ledgers.
