The history of West
Every parish had compass points before street numbers: **West** was the croft toward sunset, the outsider who arrived from the left-hand lane, the field beyond the crossroads. The name is topographic modesty — direction instead of manor — yet it crossed with Atlantic migrants who adopted or kept the spelling for their own reasons.
